Wesley moved beside him.
“Do you want me to?”
Charles looked at his son, and something passed between them. Not forgiveness. Not yet. But an offer. A bridge no wider than a hand.
“Yes,” Charles said.
Together, father and son turned the key.
The drawer opened with a soft wooden scrape.
Inside were letters tied with faded green ribbon, a leather sketchbook, and a small sealed envelope with Charles’s name written across it in elegant, slanted handwriting.
Charles did not touch the envelope.
He stared at it as if it were alive.
Dana gently said, “That appears personal. You may want privacy.”
“No,” Charles said. “Privacy is how we got here.”
He lifted the envelope, broke the brittle seal, and unfolded the letter inside.
His eyes moved across the page. Halfway down, his breathing changed.
“Dad?” Wesley said.
Charles handed him the letter without a word.
Wesley read aloud, his voice unsteady.
