The Ultrasound Exposed What Laura’s Husband Had Planned

Two heartbeats filled the ultrasound room.

Diego stood beside the examination table, staring at the monitor as though the screen had betrayed him personally.

Paola remained half a step behind him, clutching the gray divorce folder to her chest.

Dr.Salinas pointed to the first flickering shape, then moved her finger toward the second.

“There are two babies,” she said.

“Both have strong heartbeats.

Based on their measurements, Mrs.

Laura is approximately thirteen weeks pregnant.”

Diego’s vasectomy had taken place eight weeks earlier.

For several seconds, no one spoke.

The smugness disappeared from his face.

His mouth opened, but the accusation he had carried into the room no longer fit the facts in front of him.

Paola recovered first.

“Ultrasounds can be wrong,” she said.

Dr.Salinas looked at her calmly.

“Early measurements can vary by a few days.

Not by five weeks.”

I lay frozen beneath the paper sheet, one hand resting protectively over my stomach.
