I stared at that for a long time.
Then replied, "Were you having an affair with my husband?"
She wrote, "No. Never."
Then, "I know you have no reason to believe me."
She offered to talk.
I almost said no. Then I agreed to a phone call.
Melissa sounded different than I expected.
Nervous. Ashamed.
She told me Daniel had framed the situation as a stupid office lie that had gotten out of hand.
He claimed I'd think it was funny.
I laughed bitterly.
"Did he tell you he'd discussed this with me?"
"He implied you knew he'd exaggerated about your job."
"I didn't."
She went silent.
"Oh."
"Did he tell you I knew you were going as his wife?"
"No."
That mattered. Not enough. But it mattered.
I asked, "Why agree?"
She sighed.
"Honestly? Because I thought it was ridiculous and funny."
