When the Colonel Came to the Estate

“You have a niece.”

Charles sat heavily on the edge of the bed.

“I had a niece,” he whispered.

Dana’s expression softened but remained attentive.

Wesley looked back at the letter.

“I need to come home, but not to surrender. I need documents, money enough to start again, and a promise that Father will never decide my daughter belongs to him because of our name. I know you are afraid of him. I am too. But if there is any part of you that still remembers us hiding under the dining table during thunderstorms, please meet me at the old train depot on May 14.”

Wesley’s voice faded.

The room was silent except for rain.

“What happened on May 14?” I asked.

Charles covered his mouth with one hand.

“I didn’t go.”

The confession came out in a whisper.

Wesley lowered the letter.

“Why?”

Charles shook his head, eyes fixed on the floor.
