Chapter 2/5

I drove to the hospital while Nora clutched her stuffed rabbit behind me. Grant left his shift and joined us outside. Ruth suffered concussion, a fractured wrist, and seat-belt bruising across her chest.

At Nora’s appearance, Ruth wept. With her uninjured hand, she repeatedly touched Nora’s sock, murmuring, “She’s okay.”

Then Ruth looked at me. “He looked in the backseat.”

She recalled a black pickup approaching from behind on the two-lane road north of town. It clipped her rear corner, forcing her into a ditch. The driver got out, but he did not check on her.

He went straight to the rear passenger door, opened it, and appeared inside. Then he fled to his pickup.

Clements waited beyond the curtain. Juanita, a delivery driver, had seen the impact and stopped. She described that same thing: the man going directly to Nora’s door.
