So I did not stand in our doorway that morning suspecting Ruth. Perhaps Nora was exhausted or developing an illness she couldn’t describe.
At four, children can feel fear before explaining it. I felt grateful Ruth hadn’t insisted, and relieved that I’d eventually stopped insisting too.
At 8:31, she reversed out alone.
Nora stayed pressed close beside me even after Ruth’s car had disappeared from sight. There were clients to contact and a workday to rearrange, but I’d made the decision. She was home.
At 9:11, my phone rang with a number I did not recognize.
.
“Is this Brooke Langford?”
“Yes.”
“Ma’am, this is Trooper Jordan Clements with the Kentucky State Police. Your mother-in-law, Ruth Langford, has been in a collision on US 231 north of Bowling Green.”
My hand flew to my mouth. He quickly confirmed Ruth survived and was hospital-bound.
“What happened?”
He paused. I could hear Nora close by, safe in our house, while I waited for him to explain why he had called me.
