In the last one, they were holding a little sign from the photo booth.
"TILL DEATH DO US PARTY"
I almost dropped my phone.
For the next ten minutes, I did absolutely nothing.
Ben was at school.
Daniel was at work.
The house was quiet.
I sat at the kitchen table while my marriage existed in two different versions at once.
The one I knew.
And the one in those photographs.
Then Rachel messaged again.
"I feel horrible. I honestly thought it was you."
I finally replied, "You didn't do anything wrong."
That was true.
She had done me a favor.
A terrible favor. But still a favor.
I called Daniel.
He answered on the second ring.
"Hey."
His voice sounded normal.
That nearly made me laugh.
"Busy?"
"A little. What's up?"
I looked at the picture again.
"Who's Melissa?"
Silence.
Not long. Maybe two seconds.
