In other words, your scent isn’t simply an odor floating around your house.
For your dog, it can be associated with you.
That’s why your dog may become interested in your clothes after you’ve been away.
It’s also one reason dogs can become extremely interested in objects that carry a familiar person’s scent.
But there’s an important point here.
People sometimes hear about dogs detecting illness, hormones, stress, or other biological changes and assume that their dog can automatically diagnose what’s happening inside their body.
That’s too big a conclusion.
Dogs can detect extremely subtle odor differences, and specially trained dogs have demonstrated remarkable abilities in scent-detection work. But that does not mean an ordinary pet dog can reliably diagnose a medical condition simply because it sniffs you.
So if your dog suddenly becomes interested in one particular part of your body, don’t immediately assume that your dog has discovered a hidden disease.
