The Marines listened.
“I kept my rank out of sight because I didn’t want salutes.”
She looked toward the Gold Star families.
“I didn’t want anyone asking where I served.”
Then she looked back at Crawford.
“And I didn’t want status to determine whether someone treated me with basic restraint.”
Crawford swallowed.
Jessica’s voice remained calm.
“If I had been a private, you still should have let go.”
The staff sergeant nodded once.
“If I had been a civilian, you still should have let go.”
The MP sergeant’s expression tightened.
“If I had been a confused teenager wearing surplus camouflage, you still should have let go.”
Crawford stared at the ground.
“That is why I didn’t show you my card.”
No one interrupted.
Jessica continued.
“I wanted to see whether you would stop because it was right.”
She looked at the marks on her arm.
