My son said, “My wife thinks you’re a burden. And honestly… I agree.” I said, “Good to know.” That night, I quietly made one decision. But at Sunday dinner, looked at my son, and said one thing that turned the whole table silent.

When I got home, I unpacked my groceries onto my designated shelf. The rest of the fridge was looking terribly bare.

Around 6:00, the front door opened.

I heard the heavy thud of David’s gym bag hitting the floor, followed immediately by the sound of the refrigerator door swinging open.

“Mom,” David called out. “Where’s the meal prep and the protein?”

“I only shopped for myself today,” I called back from the study.

The silence that followed was louder than a shout.

The next two days were a master class in passive aggression. Sarah slammed cabinet doors. David left passive aggressive sticky notes on the counter about household contributions.

I ignored them all.

On Thursday evening, the internet went down.

I was in my study organizing my tax documents when David knocked sharply and pushed the door open without waiting for an answer.

“The Wi-Fi isn’t working,” he grumbled, holding up his tablet. “Sarah is trying to stream a movie.”
