“You work full-time. Brian has a good job. Why were both cards unavailable?”
She stood completely still.
Then she slowly sat on the arm of my couch.
“Brian left.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
She looked down.
“He moved out in March.”
“March?”
“Seven months ago.”
I could barely
believe it.
Camille gave a bitter little laugh.
“He met someone at his gym. Apparently, that’s where people go to find replacements now.”
I sat down.
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?”
“Because I’m Camille.”
Her voice broke.
“I’m supposed to have the perfect marriage. The perfect daughter. The perfect home. Mom tells everyone how successful I am.”
She wiped her eyes.
“Brian moved to Columbus. He sends child support when he remembers. I’ve been covering everything with credit cards.”
“How much do you owe?”
“Almost twenty thousand dollars.”
I stared at her.
She looked exhausted.
Not glamorous.
