at the passengers still lingering nearby.
“Not here.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“No. You were perfectly comfortable making a public declaration of love on that airplane. You don’t get to demand privacy now that people are asking questions.”
A few feet away, a passenger who had been applauding Tyler’s announcement earlier suddenly found something fascinating on his phone.
Another woman glanced at Mason and gave him a sympathetic smile.
I wished we were anywhere else.
I wished I could erase the last thirty minutes from my son’s memory.
But Icouldn’t.
So I did the only thing I could.
I knelt in front of Mason and straightened the strap of his backpack.
“Sweetheart, we’re going to get our bags and go to the hotel. You haven’t done anything wrong.”
He nodded.
Then he looked at his father one last time.
“Dad, do you still want my picture?”
Tyler froze.
The question was so simple. So innocent.
For a moment, the confident pilot who had just addressed an entire aircraft seemed unable to form a sentence.
“Of course I do, buddy,”he finally said.
Mason held out the drawing.
Tyler took it.
He glanced at the crooked letters, the blue airplane, and the little stick figures standing beneath it. Then he folded the paper and slipped it into his uniform pocket.
“Thanks, buddy.”
Mason didn’t smile.
“Okay.”
That single word sounded more devastating than any argument I could have had with Tyler.
I took my son’s hand and walked away.
Tyler called after us.
“Wait! We need to talk about this.”
I stopped but didn’t turn around.
“No, Tyler. We don’tneed to talk about what happened on that plane. We all heard you.”
“I didn’t mean for you to find out like this.”
I looked over my shoulder.
“That’s the problem. You didn’t mean for me to find out at all.”
Then I left.
That evening, Tyler called seventeen times.
I didn’t answer.
He sent messages explaining that his relationship with Vanessa had started during a difficult period in our marriage. He said he had been confused. He said he had intended to tell me eventually.
Eventually.
As if thetruth were a package he could leave on the porch until he found the time to deal with it.
The next morning, he finally sent a different message.
Tyler: Please let me come see Mason. He deserves an explanation.
I stared at the screen for a long time.
