My Four-Year-Old Daughter Screamed and Gripped the Doorframe When My Mother-in-Law Arrived to Take Her to the Farm.

Friday, I explained to Nora’s daycare director she would be staying home and repeated the names of the only people permitted to collect her. The director looked horrified.

Dalton had visited in August, asking about pickup time since he hoped to surprise his daughter. She’d refused since he wasn’t on the approved list. He’d been pleasant and left.

She’d made a note. She never notified me.

I returned to my car as Nora sang to her rabbit. I couldn’t start the engine immediately.

That day Dalton shared an old photograph with Nora, alleging Grant and I kept her from a loving dad. Others reposted it. Messages branded me a liar; one warned I’d get what I deserved.

I headed to work Saturday since I still had bills and appointments. Grant watched Nora at home. Three clients canceled before I began.

During a foil treatment, a client’s friend showed her Dalton’s post. They met my eyes in the mirror, then averted theirs.
