Then I heard Lisa talking in the kitchen.
At first, I smiled.
She had been spending a lot of time at our house since Mom got sick.
She brought meals.
Picked up medicine.
Stayed with Mom during appointments.
Sometimes she even helped Dad with errands.
I was about to walk into the kitchen when I heard Lisa laugh.
Then she said something that stopped me cold.
“I’m so tired of waiting. I just want us to finally be together.”
I froze behind the wall.
For several seconds, there was silence.
Then Dad replied.
“Sweetheart, we’ve been together for nearly a year already. She still has no idea.”
My grocery bag nearly slipped from my hands.
Lisa lowered her voice.
“I’m tired of hiding. I want to live here with you. I want us to get married.”
Dad laughed quietly.
“Just give it a little more time.”
My fingers tightened around the paper grocery handles.
