Their betrayal wasn’t the center of her final decision.
Her compassion was.
Dad eventually turned toward me.
“How long have you known?”
“About the house?”
His jaw tightened.
“About Lisa and me.”
Lisa looked sharply at him.
So he had understood my wedding card immediately.
“Since before Mom died.”
His boutonniere was already beginning to droop against his jacket.
“You heard us?”
“In the kitchen.”
Dad exhaled.
“Kristen, your mother and I hadn’t been happy for a long time.”
I raised my hand.
“Don’t.”
He stopped.
“If you want any relationship with me after today, don’t give me some story where all of this just happened by accident.”
Silence.
I looked directly at him.
“Tell me what you chose to do.”
Dad looked toward the floor.
For perhaps the first time in my life, he had no explanation prepared.
I almost smiled.
“I thought pretending not to know things was what this family did best.”
