“Yes, ma’am.”
“Then why are you asking us for a reservation?”
“Because the owner has not authorized your stay.”
Kevin gave a short laugh.
“That’s ridiculous. We’re family.”
Marcus glanced at him.
“Family status does not constitute authorization.”
I almost smiled.
Almost.
Kevin turned toward me.
“Ellie.”
I said nothing.
“You called someone?”
“I didn’t have to.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means I told Marcus exactly what I wanted when I hired him.”
Kevin’s face tightened.
“You hired a property manager?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I own a property.”
He looked genuinely offended.
As though owning something meant I had betrayed him.
Patrice stepped forward.
“Eleanor, this is absurd. We drove four hours.”
“I know.”
“We have three children.”
“I know.”
“We packed for two weeks.”
“I know.”
“Then let us inside.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
Her mouth fell open.
“You’re seriously doing this?”
