I stopped to help a woman who was dy//ing on the side of the road and lost my job because I arrived late, but when I returned to collect my things from my desk, my entire life was about to change.

Photographs scattered across the polished surface.

There were pictures of Eleanor leaving restaurants, entering meetings, walking outside her home, and visiting the bakery.

Then I saw another image.

It appeared to show me kneeling beside Eleanor on Route 18.

The photograph had been taken from across the road.

Someone had been observing the scene.

Part 5 — A Photograph Taken Before the Event

Daniel studied the roadside photograph longer than anyone else.

He lifted it carefully using the edge of a folder.

“This wasn’t printed today.”

Claire shook her head.

“I found it six days ago.”

I stared at her.

“That’s impossible.”

She looked equally confused.

“What do you mean?”

“That happened this morning.”

Claire turned pale.

Daniel examined the photograph again.

Then he moved it closer.

“Christopher.”

“What?”

“Look at your coat.”

I studied the figure kneeling beside Eleanor.

The man’s build resembled mine.

He had dark hair and wore a charcoal coat similar to the one I’d worn that morning.
