Daniel turned toward her.
“Claire?”
Eleanor nodded.
“I told her last night I was going to the bakery before coming here.”
“Anyone else?”
“Claire’s husband.”
The name caught everyone’s attention.
Marcus Vale.
I’d heard of him.
His development company controlled luxury hotels, commercial towers, and private clubs.
Business publications described him as one of Halston Capital’s major borrowers.
Daniel looked toward Eleanor.
“Mrs. Halston, there is something you need to see.”
He connected his computer to the conference-room display.
Financial records filled the screen.
I understood very little of what I was seeing.
Eleanor recognized the implications immediately.
Her face paled.
“Where did you get this?”
“Internal audit.”
“Why wasn’t I informed?”
“You were scheduled to be informed this afternoon.”
Eleanor stood.
The screen showed large transfers involving subsidiaries called Vale Meridian, Vale Infrastructure East, and North Crescent Holdings.
“What am I looking at?” I asked.
