I stopped to help a woman who was dy//ing on the side of the road and lost my job because I arrived late, but when I returned to collect my things from my desk, my entire life was about to change.

“It was plugged into your desktop.”

“That isn’t mine.”

Daniel accepted the drive carefully.

“Perhaps not.”

Within twenty minutes, the device’s serial number matched the one recorded during the transfer.

The storage device used to place Halston’s confidential documents on my laptop had been found connected to Gavin’s computer.

Gavin erupted.

He accused everyone of setting him up.

First he blamed me.

Then Halston.

Then the IT department.

Eventually, he even suggested the janitor might be responsible.

By then, his accusations had lost all credibility.

Eleanor asked everyone except Gavin, Daniel, and me to leave.

She closed the door and faced him.

“Why?”

Gavin sank into a chair.

“I didn’t steal anything.”

Daniel placed the flash drive on the desk.

“Then explain that.”

Gavin covered his face.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Finally, he whispered:

“Field.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“My partner.”

The agency’s official name was Mercer & Field.
