I stopped to help a woman who was dy//ing on the side of the road and lost my job because I arrived late, but when I returned to collect my things from my desk, my entire life was about to change.

Eleanor’s response was quiet.

“That is because it was terrible.”

Gavin continued pleading for the acquisition to proceed.

He insisted too much time and effort had already been invested.

Eleanor listened.

Then she said:

“One sentence did not destroy anything.”

She looked around the office.

“Your priorities did.”

For the first time, I saw Gavin genuinely panic.

He addressed her more familiarly.

“Eleanor.”

She raised a hand.

“Do not use my first name.”

He immediately stopped.

Eleanor returned her attention to me.

“Christopher, I came here because I wanted to thank you personally.”

“You didn’t need to.”

“I did.”

She reached into her handbag.

I briefly expected her to offer money, something I already knew I wouldn’t accept.

Instead, she handed me a business card.

“Come see me Monday.”

I examined it.

Halston Capital.

Executive Office.

“I don’t understand.”

“I want to talk.”

“About what?”

“Work.”
