Margaret eventually said yes.
She wasn’t thinking about Thomas’s money.
She wasn’t interested in the large house he owned.
She wasn’t dreaming about expensive jewelry or a luxurious lifestyle.
She was thinking about the teenager who had once walked her home through the rain.
The boy who had gotten soaked because he refused to let her walk alone.
The boy who had once promised her a diamond ring.
After all those years, she simply wanted to see what life with him might have been like.
But Thomas’s children saw the situation very differently.
They were suspicious from the beginning.
They believed Margaret had returned to Thomas’s life because of his financial circumstances.
Margaret tried to explain.
“I don’t need his money,” she told them.
But they didn’t seem interested in listening.
Thomas defended her.
He told his children that he was happy.
