I Conquered Cancer, but My Family Didn't Show up to Watch Me Ring the Bell – Then My Doctor Ran After Me With a Confession That Made Me Pale

The first sentence made my knees buckle.

    He handed me the envelope.

"We regret to inform you of the death of your father, Richard."

I stared at the date.

But why hadn't anyone told me?

I had no idea my family's biggest lie was still waiting to be uncovered.

    A letter from an attorney.

"That's impossible. Mom said Dad was helping relatives!"

"Your father died suddenly from a pulmonary embolism," Dr. Harris said.

The letter included the funeral date and an estate meeting I'd missed.

    "Why didn't anyone tell me?"

"Your mother asked us not to upset you during treatment."

    Why hadn't anyone told me?

"You knew? And you agreed?"

He lowered his eyes. "I believed she was acting in your best interest. I was wrong."

    "You should've asked me!"

"You're right, Nora. I'm sorry."

My hands trembled around the letter.
