many eggs may be laid in the same location, dozens of larvae can appear together.
Why Maggots Are More Common During Hot Weather
Summer creates almost perfect conditions for fly activity.
Food decomposes faster, odors become stronger, flies are more active, and warm temperatures can accelerate insect development. A garbage bag containing meat or fish scraps may therefore become particularly attractive when it remains outside for several days before collection.
This is why prevention becomes especially important during heat waves.
What to Do When You Discover Maggots
The first priority is removing the material that attracted the flies.
Wear household cleaning gloves and closed shoes when handling heavily contaminated garbage. Keep children and pets away from the area while you work.
If the garbage is already bagged, close the bag securely. If the bag has torn or leaked, carefully place it inside another strong garbage bag.
