At the age of 64, I married a 31-year-old man. Six months later, I noticed that every evening he secretly added something to my drink and insisted that I drink it to the last drop.

a cup next to my favorite chair, in which I used to read.

“Please, darling. It'll help you relax.

Initially, this ritual was soothing to me.

But then something changed.

I started to wake up extremely tired. I had trouble  mco concentrating, and remembering the usual conversations became difficult.

Sometimes I couldn't remember where I put my stuff.

Daniel convinced me that I was just getting used to a new lifestyle.

"You've been a little distracted lately," he said softly.

Over time, he began to answer questions for me during meetings with friends.

"Margartha needs more rest now," he explained.

Gradually, I stopped trusting my own judgment.

One afternoon, Helen came to visit me.

"You look exhausted," she noted.

  • It's nothing.

Besides, you seem absent.

I probably had too much coffee.

She grabbed my hand.

Margaret, are you happy?

I hesitated.

Sometimes I feel like I’ve stopped being myself.
