At the age of 64, I married a 31-year-old man. Six months later, I noticed that every evening he secretly added something to my drink and insisted that I drink it to the last drop.

They were downplayed every time.

Over time, she began to question her own judgment.

Listening to her, I felt like I was hearing about my own experiences.

“Why did you warn me?” I asked.

Laura smiled sadly.

When I started asking questions, no one listened to me.

I stretched out my hand across the table and squeezed her hand.

  • Thank you.

“Live well, Margaret,” she replied. “That’s enough.”

I took those words with me.

The review of the research program continued, and my marriage eventually came to an end.

Daniel did not object to the separation.

He sent another last letter.

He admitted in it that he had mistaken control for care and allowed his father's unfinished work to obscure my well-being.

One sentence caught my mind:

“I thought I was helping you to secure a better future, but I forgot to respect the life you already had.”

I folded the letter and put it in the drawer.
