“Jason,” I said quietly, “twenty-nine years ago, when everyone else saw a wheelchair… you saw me.”
He stared at me.
For a second, there was nothing in his expression.
Then his eyes widened.
His hand slowly dropped from the table.
“Rachel?”
I smiled.
He took one step backward.
“No way.”
“It’s me.”
Jason looked down at my legs.
Then back at my face.
“You’re walking.”
“I am.”
He covered his mouth with one hand and gave a small laugh.

Then, unexpectedly, his eyes filled with tears.
“I always wondered what happened to you.”
I swallowed.
“I wondered about you too.”
He looked embarrassed suddenly.
He glanced at his faded work clothes, then at the mop bucket nearby.
“Well…”
He forced a smile.
“Now you know.”
I could hear the shame in his voice.
