At prom, only one boy asked me to dance because I was in a wheelchair—29 years later, I saw him again in the last place I ever expected… and he had no idea who I was.

He read the first page.

Then the second.

His eyes stopped moving.

He looked up.

“I don’t understand.”

“It’s a job interview.”

“Rachel…”

“At our rehabilitation center.”

He immediately shook his head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m not qualified.”

“You’ll be trained.”

“I didn’t finish college.”

“I know.”

“My leg—”

“Doesn’t disqualify you.”

He stared down at the paper.

I moved closer.

“You remember what you said to me at prom?”

His eyes lifted.

I smiled.

“I told you I couldn’t dance.”

He nodded slowly.

“And you said, ‘Then we’ll do it differently.’”

Jason looked away.

I could see his jaw tightening.

“So now,” I said, “I’m saying it back to you.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“You think your life is over because it doesn’t look the way you planned.”

I shook my head.

“Then do it differently.”

Jason sat down.
