“It’s only paperwork, Hil.”
I gave it to her without a thought.
So when she suggested a weeklong vacation at the beach, I eventually agreed.
“You need a change of scenery,” she told me.
“Just the two of us.”
“Like the old days.”
We flew down to Fort Myers and took a shuttle across the causeway to Sanibel Island, Florida.
We spent our mornings walking the shoreline, collecting shells the color of peaches, and our evenings eating key lime pie on a porch while the moonlight moved across the Gulf.
For several days, I felt something I hadn’t felt since Neal’s passing.
Peace.
But on the final afternoon, Tracy’s behavior changed.
We were relaxing beneath a beach umbrella while the waves rolled onto the sand.
Then she reached toward me.
“Can I borrow your phone?”
“I want us to take one final photograph together.”
I laughed.
