Then he took a deep breath.
"I also wish to thank those who could not come," he added.
Some phones were collected.
"Because even an empty chair teaches. It teaches that sometimes applause comes from strangers before they even come from home. It teaches that you should not be diminished just because those who should have celebrated you chose to look the other way.
The director looked down.
Mariana started crying.
“And he also teaches something else,” Sofia continued, in a firmer voice. “That when no one sits behind you, it doesn’t mean you’re alone. Sometimes it means that you can finally walk without having to carry those who never thought they could get up.”
The silence lasted just a second.
At that point, the whole audience stood up.
Sofia got off the stage, feeling her legs weak. Near the stairs, a tall man in dark grey dress, with silver hair at the temples, waited for her with a bouquet of white roses.
She immediately recognized him from interviews, emails and the letter that had changed her life.
“Sofia,” he said with a serene smile, “what you just did is extraordinary.”
At 23:00, his speech was the most discussed topic on TikTok Mexico.
When his parents returned home, Diego was furious, limping and unable to speak. They had lost by 4 points. Ramón turned on television to watch the viral video.
Teresa stopped smiling first.
Ramón approached the screen.
And when the camera framed the man in grey suit next to Sofia, his face paled.
“Wait,” he muttered. “Is Alejandro Arriaga?”
PART 2
Alejandro Arriaga's name made everyone shudder in the room.
Teresa turned slowly towards Ramón.
“Do you know him?”
Ramón did not respond immediately. Her eyes were glued to the television, where Sofía appeared in her blue dress, holding a white bouquet, next to a man who seemed all too important to be at a high school graduation ceremony.
Diego took possession of the chair.
"And who is that man? Why do they make those grimaces?"
With a simple hand gesture, Ramón took away his control.
“Because that man is Alejandro Arriaga.”
Teresa covered her mouth.
"The one from the Arriaga Group?"
"It's always the same," Ramón said. "Companies, foundations, sports sponsorships, universities. Half the country wants to meet him."
