She Thought I Would Stay Silent
My mother-in-law destroyed my suitcase the morning I tried to leave for my dying father.
I had barely finished packing when Patricia appeared in the hallway.
“Where do you think you’re going?”
“My father is dying,” I said. “The hospice called me. I need to go to Iowa.”
She looked at the suitcase in my hand and laughed softly.
“Tomorrow is Thanksgiving. We have eighteen guests coming.”
“I’m sorry, but my father may not have another day.”
I tried to walk past her.
She grabbed my suitcase.
I held on.
For a few seconds, neither of us moved.
Then she suddenly yanked it from my hands and slammed it onto the concrete garage floor.
CRACK.
The suitcase split open.
My clothes scattered across the floor.
One of the wheels rolled underneath the car.
I stared at it, completely stunned.
Then my husband, Ethan, walked in.
I expected him to defend me.
Instead, he looked at the broken suitcase and said:
“Claire, don't make this dramatic.”
I looked at him.
“My father is dying.”
He sighed.
“And my entire family is coming tomorrow. We can't just cancel everything because you're emotional.”
That sentence broke something inside me.
Not because he was angry.
