My Five-Year-Old Son Took One Look at Our Newborn …

My heart stopped.

For a moment, I couldn’t even breathe.

I stared at Max, searching his little face for any sign that he was making up a story.

“What did you see, sweetheart?” I asked softly.

His small fingers tightened around mine.

“I wasn’t supposed to see,” he whispered. “Daddy took me to get apple juice because you were sleeping. When we came back, we got lost.”

My stomach twisted.

“The hospital is really big,” he continued. “Daddy was asking a nurse where your room was, and I looked through a window.”

“What window?”

“The one with all the babies.”

The neonatal nursery.

I remembered it clearly. Lily had spent a couple of hours there after birth while the nurses monitored her breathing. Nothing serious—just routine observation before bringing her back to my room.

“What did you see there?”

Max swallowed hard.

“I saw a lady wearing blue clothes.”

“A nurse?”

“I don’t know.”

“What was she doing?”

“She picked up a baby.”

“Okay…”
