The hospital bag sat by the front door like a witness.
Madison Walker had packed it three days earlier, then unpacked it, then packed it again because the tiny socks made her cry and the paperwork made everything feel too real.
By Thursday morning, the bag was ready.
Her husband was ready too, but not for the same thing.
Ethan rolled a black suitcase down the hallway with one hand and checked his phone with the other.
He wore khaki shorts, a navy polo, and the sunglasses his mother had bought him for Christmas.
Madison stood barefoot in one of his old sweatshirts, forty weeks pregnant, swollen from her ankles to her fingertips, watching him step around the bag that held their son’s first outfit.
“Are you really leaving today?” she asked.
Ethan sighed like she had asked him to cancel a meeting instead of witness the birth of his first child.
“Maddie, we already talked about this.”
They had not talked about it.
He had announced it three weeks earlier, over dinner, while she tried to eat chicken in pieces small enough not to give her heartburn.
His parents had booked a long weekend in Scottsdale.
His mother needed family time.
The flights were expensive.
The rental car was already paid for.
Madison had been eight and a half months pregnant then, staring at him across the table while he said the due date was just an estimate.
That was Ethan’s gift.
He could wrap cruelty in practical words and convince himself it had become logic.
Outside, his mother’s SUV honked.
Madison looked toward the window and saw Lorraine behind the wheel, chin high, perfect blonde bob tucked behind one ear.
Ethan’s father sat in the passenger seat, scrolling through his phone.
Neither of them came inside.
Neither of them asked if she was all right.
“I could go into labor today,” Madison said.
Ethan looked at his watch.
“Then call an Uber.”
The baby shifted hard under her ribs.
Madison pressed a hand to her stomach.
“Ethan.”
