“Yes, ma’am.”
“Why did you say ‘no’?”
Carlos pressed his lips together.
“Because I didn’t want to lose my job.”
Laura felt a lump in her throat.
“Did you think I’d fire you for having a sick daughter?”
Carlos answered honestly.
“Rich people don’t usually have time for other people’s problems.”
Laura lowered her gaze.
She couldn’t believe that… for years… that had been true.
She slowly approached the bed.
She looked at the girl.
Her pale skin.
Her shallow breathing.
And then she made a decision.
“Tomorrow at eight in the morning,” she said, “I want you to be at San Gabriel Hospital.”
Carlos frowned.
“Ma’am… that hospital is private.”
“I know.”
“We can’t afford it.”
“You don’t have to.”
