My father forgot to hang up and I heard, “It’s so dumb that it lets us stay,” so I booked his dream trip to Italy, sold my 980,000 home

He grew led but obeyed, leaving the heavy bag in the garage.
I took it mentally. Clubs are staying here.
The morning of his departure came in a fog that preceded dawn. I took them to the airport at 4 a.m. The trunk was packed with three huge suitcases for a two-week trip.

On the exit side, my mother gave me a hasty hug that smelled of expensive perfume. “Be good while we’re gone. Keep the house clean.”
“Of course.”
Dad turned around before pushing the suitcase through the sliding doors. “Remember,” he said, “that the golf green should be watered twice a day. Don’t let the artificial grass dry out. And fix that sprinkler before we get back.”
“Yes, sir.” I kept my head down, with a soft voice.
He patted me on the shoulder, the same one he had given me a few days earlier. “She’s my girlfriend.”
I saw them disappear in the terminal. The moment the automatic doors closed behind them, the mass mask fell from my face. I got back in the car and, when I got on the freeway, a laugh ran away from my chest. It was not a joyful sound. It was dark, sharp and irregular.
