My father forgot to hang up and I heard, “It’s so dumb that it lets us stay,” so I booked his dream trip to Italy, sold my 980,000 home

I poured coffee myself, watching the steam rise. “I’m going to take a look at today’s flight options.”
Mom smiled radiantly. “Fantastic. Oh, and we’re gonna need money to spend. Maybe 3,000 dollars? For dinners and souvenirs.”
“Good.”
Both blinked. The fight they were preparing for never came.
“Really?” His mother’s eyes narrowed slightly, distrusting this easy victory.
“Truly.” I left the cup, forcing myself to smile, but it didn’t get to the eyes. “You are right. You deserve a good holiday. After everything you’ve been through financially, you should have fun.”
Dad relaxed, satisfied. “It’s more correct. I knew you’d change your mind. The family takes care of the family, Skyler. That’s what your aunt would have wanted.”
Aunt Alice would have set the house on fire rather than letting those vultures take over her work of life. But I just agreed.
“I book flights this morning.”
