“I’m trying to help.”
“And I’m trying to understand why you suddenly care.”
Her words struck him harder than he expected.
Daniel had negotiated billion-dollar acquisitions without blinking. He had faced hostile investors, ruthless competitors, and courtroom battles that would have destroyed lesser men.
Yet standing in front of the woman he had once loved, he could barely find the right words.
“Because he’s my son,” he said quietly.
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“He was your son when he was born, too.”
Daniel lowered his head.
There was no defense against that truth.
Finally, Noah spoke from his wheelchair.
“Mom?”
Emily turned immediately.
“What is it, sweetheart?”
“Can we let him try?”
She stared at her son.
Noah looked at Daniel, then back at her.
“I don’t know if he’s a good dad. I don’t even know him. But you always told me that people deserve a chance to do the right thing.”
