After the movie ended, I glanced over at Diane. She was looking down at Cooper, her expression soft and unguarded. For a moment, she looked like she used to \u2014 the woman I had married. The woman I had loved. But then, something shifted, and I saw a sadness in her eyes that I couldn\u2019t explain. It wasn\u2019t just sadness, though. It was something else \u2014 something deeper. Something unresolved.<\/p>\n
\u201cI should go,\u201d she said quietly, as if waking from a dream.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s almost ten,\u201d I said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s forty minutes back to Durham.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDiane,\u201d I said, my tone firm, but not unkind. \u201cThe couch folds out. You know where the extra blankets are. It doesn\u2019t make sense to drive forty minutes at ten o\u2019clock when you have to be back here at nine tomorrow morning anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n
She hesitated for a moment, her eyes searching my face. Something passed across her expression \u2014 uncertainty, maybe regret. Then, she finally nodded. \u201cOkay,\u201d she said, her voice quiet.<\/p>\n
