A soft laugh moved through the stadium, the kind of polite ripple an audience gives a respected speaker before she has even earned it.<\/p>\n

Not abruptly. Not all at once. But in a strange, rolling hush that started near the faculty seats and spread outward until even the families in the upper tiers stopped rustling programs and whispering over cameras.<\/p>\n

Dr. Pierce\u2019s gaze found me again. Not for long. Just long enough to make my stomach twist.<\/p>\n

My fingers tightened around my phone beneath the folds of my robe.<\/p>\n

But of course people looked. Not the whole stadium, not dramatically, but enough. Heads turned. Eyes shifted. I felt them graze my face, my empty chairs, the folded name cards printed with my family\u2019s names.<\/p>\n

David Evans.<\/p>\n

Valerie Evans.<\/p>\n

Tiffany Evans.<\/p>\n

Michael Evans.<\/p>\n

My brother Michael was away at a tech conference, which was the excuse he\u2019d given three weeks ago. My parents had not bothered with excuses once the cruise tickets were booked. Tiffany had posted a story at sunrise in a bikini, holding a coconut drink and captioning it, \u201cCelebrating my milestone with the people who actually show up for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

That one had gotten over six hundred likes before I even put on my graduation robe.<\/p>\n

I stared down at my lap, willing the earth to open.<\/p>\n
