Probably many. And they’d be right. I do not write this to justify myself, but because sometimes a person needs to say out loud his greatest shame in order to finally understand what kind of person he became. My name is Nathan. When I met Eleanor, I was twenty-five. I had no home, not a stable job,

It was hard.

At first I wanted to abandon it.

I wanted to disappear and return to the same habits that had already destroyed my life once. But every time I thought about surrendering, I remembered Eleanor’s letter.

It’s been many years since.

I’m not rich.

But I’m no longer the man who expected another person to die so I could start living.

Now, once a week, I volunteer at the charity

center that Eleanor left much of his money to.

Sometimes I meet young people there who painfully remind me of the person I was before.

Cold looks.

Pride wound.

Empty pockets.

Rage against the whole world.

Sometimes someone says to me:

“You can’t understand what it means to have nothing.”

I usually smile in silence.

And then I answer:

“I understand it better than you imagine.”

That wooden box is still on my table.

Sometimes I open it and read Eleanor’s letter again.

And every time I do, I think about how late I realized that Eleanor had never been my punishment.

It was my salvation.

I married her because I wanted to take advantage of her.

And in the end he left me something whose value no will could measure.

He left me a chance to become someone else.

So, if someone who is reading this right now is

using another person, deceiving them or waiting for someone’s suffering to make their own life easier, remember this:

Sometimes life doesn’t punish us immediately.

Sometimes he sends us someone who, in silence, shows us the person we could have been all the time.

I didn’t love Eleanor like she deserved.

But she took care of me in a way that I still try to deserve today.

And after all these years, there is a question that keeps haunting me:

If you had been in Eleanor’s place, would you have forgiven me… or would you have let him receive exactly what he really deserved?
