Probably many. And they’d be right. I do not write this to justify myself, but because sometimes a person needs to say out loud his greatest shame in order to finally understand what kind of person he became. My name is Nathan. When I met Eleanor, I was twenty-five. I had no home, not a stable job,

They had all been paid.

Eleanor had liquidated every one of my debts

before I died. I was still.

Then I found the letter.

He said:

“Nathan:

I always knew why you married me.

You thought I was old and couldn’t see what was going on.

But I saw everything.

I saw you watch my medicine.

I saw the silence on your face when I spoke fondly.

I saw that my house interested you more than I did.

But I also saw in you the boy who no one held a hand when he was still on time.

You thought you wanted a house and money.

But I realized that what you really needed was a second chance.

I’m not going to leave you the house, because a home achieved through deception will never give you peace.

I’m not leaving you money either, because easy money could destroy you again.

Instead, I’ve paid all your debts.

I’ve rented a small apartment for you

for a year.

And I’ve found you work in a place where no one knows your past.

You can start over there.

I’m just asking you one thing:

Don’t become the man you were trying to be when you were with me.

Become the man I could sometimes see in your eyes.

Eleanor.”

I read that letter again.

And then once again.

Then I really cried for the first time in my life.

Not because I hadn’t received the house.

Not because I would have lost the money.

But because I finally realized that a woman I had never loved as I deserved had worried so much about me that not even my lies had managed to stop her from still being good to me.

She had seen something in me that I myself had lost many years ago.

To a human being.

That day I left the law firm

without any inheritance in my hands.

But for the first time in my life I really understood what it meant to embarrass myself.

I went to the little apartment that Eleanor had rented for me.

The rooms were small.

The walls were simple.

The furniture was old.

But that apartment was the first place in many years where I could sleep without fear.

On Monday I started working on the job that Eleanor had gotten for me.
