His eyes narrowed.

It was the first time I had said the word to him without explaining, apologizing or softening my voice.
Paola shifted beside him.
Her phone, resting on the edge of the examination table, lit up with a message preview.
The sender was Diego.
The message read, “Once Laura signs away the house, we can announce our baby.”
My gaze moved from the phone to Paola’s stomach.
She grabbed the device and turned the screen facedown.
Dr.Salinas had already seen it.
So had Diego.
His face changed again, this time not with shame but calculation.
“That is none of Laura’s business,” he said.
A laugh escaped me.
It was quiet and unfamiliar.
“You brought her into my ultrasound carrying divorce papers.
You made her my business.”
Diego stepped closer to me.
“You are confused and emotional.
Give me the report, and we can discuss this at home.”
“You do not live at my home anymore.”
