My Stepdaughter Returned Every Birthday Gift I Sent for 12 Years – In the 13th Year, I Stopped, and a Huge Box from Her Arrived at My Door, and I Went Pale When I Opened It
Silence.
“Chloe, sweetheart. It’s Alice.”
Her breath caught.
Then she said something that broke my heart.
“I thought you hated me.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“I thought you hated me too.”
There was a long pause.
“He told me you didn’t want me living there,” she whispered. “Dad barely talked about you. I thought that was because you told him not to.”
“He told me you couldn’t stand having me in the house.”
Then Chloe started crying.
And so did I.
“I loved Sunday lasagna,” she said through tears. “I loved when you laughed at my stupid jokes.”
“I still have the cookbook I bought you.”
“What?”
“All your gifts. Every year. I kept them.”
She cried harder.
“I wrote to you every year.”
“I know now.”
We talked for what felt like minutes and hours at the same time.
Then Chloe asked,
“Can I come down this weekend?”
“Yes.”
I didn’t even hesitate.
“Yes. Please.”
When David came back into the room, I was still sitting on the couch.
“Alice, I’m sorry,” he said. “I never meant for—”
“You stole more than a decade from us.”
He looked down.
“And you did it because you were more afraid of coming second than you were of losing both of us completely.”
He didn’t argue.
“I don’t know what our marriage is anymore,” I told him. “But I’m not making that decision today.”
Two weeks later, a car pulled into our driveway.
It was the second weekend in a row Chloe had visited.
I went outside.
My stepdaughter stepped from the car carrying something against her chest.
The cookbook.
The same one I had bought for one of her birthdays.
“I brought it,” she said.
I smiled.
“I thought maybe we could make something together.”
I opened the front door.
And we walked into the kitchen side by side.
For twelve years, I thought the silence between us was a wall Chloe had built.
It wasn’t.
It was a door David had locked from both sides.
And all it took to finally open it was the one birthday gift I chose not to send.
