MY SON BROUGHT HIS NEW BOYFRIEND HOME — THE MOMENT I SAW HIS FACE, I LOCKED HIM IN THE BASEMENT AND CALLED THE POLICE.

“Because you were inside it, baby,” I said. “And because he’s good at this. He’s done it eleven times. You’ve been in love once.

That’s not stupid. That’s just being nineteen and having a heart.

The heart’s not the problem, Tyler. The heart is the best thing about you. He’s the problem. Men like him look for exactly the good things in you and use them as the door.

You didn’t get fooled because you’re foolish.

You got targeted because you’re kind. There’s a difference, and I never want you to forget it.”

PART 4

The days after were hard in a way I hadn’t expected.

Tyler didn’t just lose a boyfriend. He lost the story he’d been telling himself — the first-love story, the “someone finally chose me” story. And he had to grieve that while also being grateful he’d been saved from it, and those two feelings do not sit comfortably together.

There was also a harder conversation, and we had it a few days later, on the back porch.

“Mom,” Tyler said. “When you locked him down there. And I yelled at you. I said you were doing it because I’m gay.”

“I remember.”

“I really thought that, for a second. That you’d been pretending to be okay with me this whole time and it finally came out.”

I chose my words carefully, because this mattered more than the scammer, more than the money, more than any of it.

“Tyler, I need you to hear something, and I need you to hear it separately from everything else that happened that day.

The fact that your first instinct — the fear that leapt up fastest — was that I’d betray you over who you are… that tells me something. Not about you being paranoid. About how much the world has already taught you to brace for that. That somewhere, even with me, you’ve been holding your breath.

I’m sorry the world taught you that.

I’m going to spend the rest of my life proving it wrong.

I did not lock that man in the basement because you love men. I would have driven him there myself and locked him in the trunk on the way if he’d been a woman doing the same con. I don’t care who you bring home, sweetheart. I care whether they’re good to you and good for you.

That’s the only test. It was always the only test.”

Tyler was quiet for a long time.

Then he said, “The next one’s going to have to get past you first, huh.”

“The next one,” I said, “is going to have to get past both of us. Because you’re going to be a lot harder to fool now, and that’s the one gift that garbage human accidentally gave you. You’ll never hand your heart over quite so fast again. That’s sad. It’s also going to keep you safe.”

“I don’t want to be someone who can’t trust people.”

“You won’t be,” I promised. “You’ll be someone who trusts people who earn it. That’s not the same as being closed. That’s just being nineteen turning into being wise. It costs something. But it’s not the same as losing your heart. Your heart’s fine. I checked. It’s the best one I know.”

He leaned his head on my shoulder, the way he did when he was little, and we sat on the porch until it got dark.
