Daniel took a long breath.

“This isn’t a nursing home, Dad.”

I looked again at the building.

“Then why are we here?”

He reached into the glove compartment and pulled out a folder.

“I’ve been talking to specialists for three weeks.”

I stared at him.

He continued.

“Your condition isn’t contagious. I knew that. Your doctor knew that. Jessica knew it too.”

For a moment, I couldn’t speak.

“What do you mean she knew?”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Two weeks ago, I heard her telling Lily that she could get sick just by touching you. That night I called your doctor myself.”

He had then contacted a clinic that specialized in chronic swelling and mobility problems.

They had reviewed my records.

They believed treatment could reduce some of the swelling, help protect my skin, and make walking easier.

“But why didn’t you tell me?” I asked.

“Because every time I defended you, Jessica threatened to take the children and disappear to her mother’s house.”

My stomach dropped.

Daniel looked down.

“I needed time to figure out what to do without making things worse.”

Then he said something I never expected.

“Dad, when I told you to pack your things this morning, I wasn’t choosing her.”

He pointed toward the building.
