Jessica had moved it to the basement.
Then one night, I heard her arguing with Daniel in the kitchen.
“I can’t do this anymore!” she shouted.
“Jessica, the doctor said—”
“I don’t care what the doctor said!”
Then came the words I would never forget.
“Either your father leaves this house, or I take the children and go. Choose.”
The next morning, Daniel entered my room.
His face was tense.
He wouldn’t look at me.
I already knew.
“You don’t have to explain,” I whispered.
He stayed silent for several seconds.
Then finally said:
“Dad… pack your things.”
I put my medication, two shirts, my wife’s photograph, and Lily’s little drawing into an old bag.
When I reached the front door, Lily started walking toward me.
Jessica immediately pulled her back.
“No. Don’t touch him.”
Daniel took my bag and helped me into the car.
I believed my son had chosen his wife over me.
I believed I was being sent away for good.
But forty minutes later, Daniel drove past the road to the nursing home and stopped in front of a large medical building.
I looked at him.
“What is this?”
Daniel finally turned toward me.
And his next words made me realize I had misunderstood almost everything…
