My stomach dropped.
Every symptom was written there.
Every warning had been sitting in plain sight.
I looked at my mother.
“You saw this.”
She crossed her arms.
“I saw a lot of dramatic hospital language.”
Clara’s eyes fluttered.
“Phone,” she whispered.
I leaned closer.
“What?”
Her cracked lips moved again.
“She… took… my phone.”
The room went still.
My mother’s face changed.
Not guilt.
Fear.
I looked toward the kitchen counter. Clara’s phone was not there. Not on the sofa. Not near the bassinet.
“Where is her phone?” I asked.
My mother lifted her chin.
“She kept calling you over nonsense. You were working. I put it away so she could focus.”
“Where?”
She said nothing.
