Part Three: The Man Called Adrian Cole
By the time the sun finally rose, Marcus was gone entirely, led away in handcuffs.
His real name had never actually been Marcus Whitfield at all. It was Adrian Cole. He'd spent years laundering money through logistics companies serving as fronts, all tied directly to stolen medical equipment. My own laptop had functioned as his cover the entire time — files quietly moved under my name, accounts formally authorized in mine without my knowledge.
I hadn't actually been his wife, in any real sense.
I had been his clean identity.
Bianca explained all of it to me later, sitting inside a gray FBI conference room. "We didn't fully realize how close he was to actually leaving until tonight specifically. Once we intercepted his mother's car with Oliver inside it, we had to move immediately."
"His parents?" I asked, still barely processing any of it.
"Not his actual parents at all. Associates instead. They raised him themselves, after his real father went to prison years ago."
Those particular words hollowed something out inside me that I doubted would ever fully refill again.
Oliver was returned to me at 6:40 that same morning, clutching a stuffed fox toy Bianca had bought at some roadside gas station along the way. I held him so tightly against my chest that he squirmed uncomfortably. "Mommy, too squishy," he complained.
I laughed and cried at exactly the same moment, unable to separate the two feelings apart from each other.
