Over time, he transitioned from acting into directing, earning praise for his work on television series including Orange Is the New Black, Gossip Girl, and numerous other productions.
Reinventing Himself Again
McCarthy eventually discovered another unexpected passion—travel writing.
His articles appeared in respected publications including National Geographic Traveler and Men’s Journal, and he was named Travel Journalist of the Year in 2010.
He believes acting and travel writing have more in common than most people realize.
“They’re both storytelling… They’re both some expression of creativity.”
Travel also offered him something Hollywood rarely had.
“I’m just a better version of myself when I’m traveling.”
