Then she added quietly, “For once, Rachel, don’t let me be the person who tells you afterward.”
Those words stopped me.

I knew exactly what she meant.
Choir concerts.
Science fairs.
Parent meetings.
School assemblies.
There was always work.
Always a deadline.
Always something I convinced myself couldn’t wait.
Linda had attended nearly everything.
