A three-year-old housekeeper’s daughter painted all over my face while I pretended to sleep

“I shot near Adrian.”

“You kidnapped me.”

“I pulled you from a compromised surgical room.”

We all froze.

Vincent looked at me.

“I did not betray you.”

Salvatore raised the detonator slightly.

“Careful.”

Vincent ignored him.

“The video in your mansion was staged. The blood on my shirt was from Daniel’s shot. Salvatore forced me onto that screen because he believed I had changed sides.”

“Did you?”

Vincent smiled faintly.

“Years ago.”

Then he turned and fired at Salvatore.

The bullet struck my father’s hand.

The detonator flew across the floor.

Chaos erupted.

Matteo tackled Vincent as Salvatore’s guards opened fire. I covered Lily and Elena while Isabella crawled toward the detonator.

A bullet struck the stone near her head.

I fired twice.

Salvatore disappeared behind the altar.

Vincent shouted, “The charges are on a dead-man timer!”

The detonator screen flashed.

Three minutes.

Elena grabbed Lily.

“Go!”

We ran toward the crypt.

Matteo and Vincent followed, carrying Isabella between them.

Behind us, Salvatore’s men pursued.

The tunnel beneath the cathedral narrowed into darkness. Dust rained from the ceiling as the timer counted down through Vincent’s remote display.

Two minutes.

At the final gate, we found a biometric lock.

A small glass panel glowed red.

Salvatore’s voice came through the speaker.

“Only Lily can open it.”

Elena held her tighter.

“No.”

“The cathedral explodes in ninety seconds,” he said. “Place her hand on the panel.”

I examined the lock.

The system required a blood sample.

My father had designed the escape route so that the child would be forced to unlock his accounts.

“Do it,” Isabella said.

“No,” Elena replied.

“Not for the money. For the door.”

Lily looked at me.

“Will it hurt?”

The question nearly destroyed me.

“A little.”

She held out her tiny hand.

“Then you hold me.”

I lifted her.

Elena pressed Lily’s finger to the panel.

A needle clicked.

Lily winced but did not cry.

The gate opened.

At the same moment, every light in the tunnel turned green.

Vincent stared at his device.

“The accounts are unlocking.”

Salvatore had tricked us.

The blood sample opened more than the door.

Across the world, his hidden assets were becoming accessible.

A screen illuminated on the wall.

Account totals appeared.

Billions.

Names of senators, judges, corporations, and criminal families scrolled beneath them.

Then another message appeared.

**PRIMARY HEIR CONFIRMED: LILY ROMANO.**

Salvatore’s voice filled the tunnel.

“Thank you, Adrian.”

The timer reached ten seconds.

We threw ourselves through the gate.

The cathedral exploded.

Stone, fire, and darkness swallowed the passage behind us.

When I opened my eyes, Lily was still in my arms.

Alive.

But Matteo lay beneath a fallen beam.

And Salvatore had escaped with access to an empire now legally controlled by my three-year-old daughter.

# **PART 6 — THE EMPIRE BUILT FOR A CHILD**

We carried Matteo from the wreckage just before the tunnel collapsed completely.

His leg was broken, but he was alive.

For the first time, all of us reached daylight together.

My mother.

My brother.

Elena.

Lily.

The family Salvatore had spent decades dividing now stood beneath the gray Chicago dawn.

Vincent emerged last.

I raised my weapon.

He did not resist.
